community matron positions in respiratory
« on: January 10, 2006, 01:12:01 AM »
Hi,

I have recently heard from a colleauge in the UK that the UK White Paper on community health and care services will focus on long-term measures for the prevention of illness and health improvement in primary care and support for patients and carers, providing high quality care in the right place, respecting patient choice, considering clinical issues and value for money.

I was wondering if there is any new roles in the UK that ARNS members are aware of , such as that of the community matron managing care for people with long-term respiratory conditions, giving health care professionals opportunities to develop and modernise their roles?

We have community matrons in our area who concentrate on long term conditions. It is to be seen if they manage to keep patients out of the GP surgery and quite a few of the GP's are very sceptical about them (well there's a surprise). Ours mainly concentrate on CCF, Diabetes and COPD.

There is a community respiratory nurse specialist post being developed in Cambridge for management of COPD patients in the PCT by providing anticipatory care, admission avoidance, education and satelite Nurse Led Clinics. Also it is expected the person in post will provide follow-up of LTOT patients as they are likely to be known to this nurse due to severity of disease. The job title is undecided and maybe Community Matron in Respiratory disease management or Community Respiratory Nurse Specialist.

We are also setting up a similar position in our PCT

We have 3 new community matrons in place. One deals with copd. There is future funding for further nurses. They are band 7.[8D]

I am currently in between posts in Luton, one as a Respiratory nurse specialist and a Rapid Response Care sister and would like a permanent position as a Respiratory Nurse Specialist or as community matron band 7.
